Gallant considered his senior task force officers. He knew Captain Ramsey of the Indomitable and Captains Hernandez of the Invincible from their performance in the Ross star system. But he hadn’t met Captain Jackson of the Courageous before she joined the task force.

He asked, “XO, do you know Captain Jackson of the Courageous?”

Fletcher said, “Not well, sir. All I know is that she was a favorite of Admiral Graves. I’m surprised he parted with her for this mission. However, she is renowned for her unbridled courage.”

Gallant was pleased that the XO had favorable words. He would have to count on her when tough decisions were needed.

Fletcher said, “Our task force will face severe challenges. I hope the plan is adaptable enough to meet them.”

“It’s a good plan,” he muttered. “It will work.”

The XO leaned over, skimmed the orders, and said dryly, “How many times have you seen a good plan fall apart? Especially when the enemy holds all the cards.”

“Not all the cards,” said Gallant. “We still have the element of surprise.”
